Carrie Raises Human-Rights Concerns Over Proposed Prison-Labour Cleanup Program
During the station’s “Speak Your Mind Saturdays” segment, host Carry V welcomed listener Ms. Carrie to discuss Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander’s proposal to employ convicted inmates in public-space maintenance.
Carrie questioned the feasibility of the plan, citing human-rights issues: “Hard labour is hard labour. Human rights must be respected, and I don’t think they’ll actually implement it.” She expressed skepticism that prisons would be allowed to dispatch inmates for tasks such as cutting grass, painting stones, or picking up garbage.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of reduced municipal costs, Carrie warned that any rollout must safeguard prisoners’ rights and ensure proper oversight. Her comments underscored the need for a balanced approach that addresses both community cleaning needs and the ethical treatment of inmates.
