Hantavirus: Low Risk, Not a Media Sensation
The podcast episode opened with a discussion of hantavirus, a rare rodent-borne disease.
Dr. Barke emphasized that the virus is “extraordinarily rare” — roughly 50–100 cases are reported annually in the United States — and that media coverage often inflates its danger.
Transmission occurs when aerosolized dust containing rodent urine, droppings, or saliva is inhaled, such as while cleaning a dusty, rodent-infested garage. Direct bites are even less common.
He advised simple preventive steps: wear a mask when cleaning areas with rodent contamination, avoid sweeping or vacuuming without protection, and seal up rodent habitats.
Dr. Barke noted that healthy individuals typically recover without complications, and that the fear generated by headlines far exceeds the actual risk.
Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine, and Compounding Pharmacy
When asked about treatment options, Dr. Barke mentioned that “ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine” have been used in the majority of hantavirus cases, though he stressed that most people with intact immune systems recover without medication.
He disclosed that he personally keeps a bottle of ivermectin on hand for travel, though he clarified that it is a human-grade formulation compounded by Integrity Compounding Pharmacy in Costa Mesa, California, not the animal product sold for horses or pets.
Integrity Compounding Pharmacy, run by pharmacist Mike Pavlovich, creates custom, preservative-free medications, including bioidentical hormones, pure ibuprofen, and antiparasitics such as ivermectin and mebendazole.
The pharmacy can tailor dosages based on weight and provides “pure” formulations without additives like polysorbate 80 or artificial colors.
Dr. Barke highlighted that the pharmacy also offers “bioidentical hormones for men and women” and that patients can obtain ivermectin “behind-the-counter” in many states, including Texas and California, with a prescription.
SSRIs: Widespread Use, Serious Warnings
The conversation shifted to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants for children and adults.
Dr. Barke listed familiar brand names including Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Selexa, and explained that all SSRIs carry an FDA black-box warning for increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults.
He warned listeners not to discontinue SSRIs abruptly, describing severe withdrawal symptoms such as worsening depression, night sweats, irritability, and mood instability.
Instead, Dr. Barke recommends a gradual taper. For example, converting a 20 mg dose of Prozac to a liquid formulation and reducing the dose by 1 mg each month until discontinuation, a process that can take a year or longer.
Alternative Strategies for Youth Mental Health
Beyond medication, Dr. Barke advocated a holistic approach for children experiencing anxiety or depression:
- Sleep hygiene – ensure adequate, regular sleep.
- Nutrition – eliminate ultra-processed foods, excessive sugar, and fast-food meals; consider omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and vitamin D supplementation.
- Screen time reduction – limit exposure to smartphones, Instagram, TikTok, and video games; encourage outdoor play and sunlight.
- Human interaction – foster face-to-face conversation; his own charter school, Orange County Classical Academy, bans phones on campus to promote social engagement.
- Professional support – seek counseling, evaluate for thyroid disorders, iron deficiency, anemia, gut health issues, or hormonal imbalances.
- Faith and community – participation in religious or community activities can bolster mental well-being.
Dr. Barke stressed that emotional distress often signals underlying life stressors rather than a medication deficiency, urging parents to investigate bullying, relationship problems, or overstimulation before turning to prescriptions.
